Summary

Job Summary

Under limited supervision is responsible for ordering, tracking, and receiving of surgical instruments, supplies, physical set building, vendor/OR coordinating and backup inventory maintenance, instructions for use (IFU) documentation, workflow process improvements, and generally maintaining an adequate level of instruments necessary for the efficient functioning of customer departments.
 
Job Responsibilities
  • Ensures instrument trays are up and operational.
  • Obtains quotes from vendors as needed, and submits orders for approval
  • Works with the OR staff to ensure proper instruments are available and instrument par levels are maintained.
  • Updates files, coordinate instruments needed, count sheets are created and maintained, assists in tracking instruments sent out for repair
  • Function in the department as SPD Tech completing all duties and functions in that role (decontamination, assembling, and sterilization).
  • Maintains the integrity of the electronic instrument tracking system.
  • Makes recommendation for future instrument orders based on analysis of past tray builds and usages
  • Assist OR team leaders with open instrumentation projects, building instrument trays if needed for coverage, documenting manufacturer recommendations, and getting new trays into circulation. Identify and suggest cost-saving approaches to storage and purchasing of inventory.
  • Serve as an instrument expert and resource for staff related to instrument needs.
  • Attends/conducts instrument tray optimization/reduction meetings.
  • Acts as a liaison between the instrument tracking system provider, staff, facility information systems, and contracted software vendor.
  • Independently determines appropriate container size for instrument containers, assess needs for custom made instrument carriers, weigh and assemble instrument sets according to AAMI standards.
  • Orders other department supplies (as needed)
  • Perform other departmental duties (as needed)
  • Maintain inventory/supplies for instruments.
  • Coordination of instrumentation needed based upon OR schedule.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or higher preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years' relevant experience required
  • CRCST - Certified and Registered Central Service Technician through the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) required within 24 months of employment in this position OR
  • CSPDT - Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) required within 24 months of employment in this position OR
  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required within 24 months of employment in this position OR
  • TS-C - Tech in Surgery-Certified through National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) required within 24 months of employment in this position
